As of today it is exactly one month until I set off from Edinburgh. By this time – 5.55pm as I write – on the 3rd of April I will, all being well, have visited Galashiels, Melrose, Hawick and Dumfries before arriving in Kirkcudbright on Scotland’s south coast. I’ll then be heading on to Gatehouse, where a very kind follower of A Scottish Journey has offered to put me up for the night.
There are a few things still to be sorted, some of which involve the bike. First of all, I’ll need to dig it out:
Then there’s just the matter of an MOT and service and the installation of some new, waterproof luggage on the back and, in vehicular terms, I’m good to go.
I also need to get a good supply of my A Scottish Journey postcards printed. The idea is that I’ll have people all round the country fill them out with messages about what Scotland and Scottishness mean to them, with the best then being incorporated into the book.
The main job still on the To-Do list is arranging accommodation and, for that, I need your help. I decided right at the beginning that I wanted to avoid using hotels and B&Bs if at all possible. Instead I’m hoping to stay with different people across the country in the hope that doing so will give me a more nuanced and honest view of what modern Scotland means to the people who live here.
So far people have been extremely generous, and I have been able to arrange somewhere to stay in Kirkcudbright, Glasgow, Kirkwall and Aberdeen. This means that I am only looking for some overnight shelter for the following locations/dates:
- Edinburgh – Monday 2nd April, 2018
- Oban – Thursday 5th April, 2018
- Plockton – Friday 6th April, 2018
- Ullapool – Saturday 7th April, 2018
- Inverness – Tuesday 10th April, 2018
UPDATE – 12/3/18: I’ve now arranged somewhere to stay in Edinburgh and near Oban. If you live in or near Plockton, Ullapool or Inverness, or know someone who does, your help would be hugely appreciated.
Everyone involved in the project in this way will be included in the book itself and will also receive a free copy upon publication.
If you or someone you know lives in (or even close to) one of these locations and might be interested in hosting me for a night then please do get in touch using the form below. If not then sharing this post on Facebook, Twitter and other social media would be hugely appreciated too.
